Dear Friends, Fund Companies and Colleagues,
MFEX continues to grow in strategic markets in Europe and Asia and before everyone is leaving the office for the summer holidays, we would like to share some “travel suggestions” for our industry.
In particular, we would like to share our impressions of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. MFEX has been doing business in these markets for many years. Some of our first clients came from the Netherlands; Luxembourg is the European hub for custody and fund registrations and we are emerging as a market leader in Belgium.
MFEX – Benelux Overview
Belgium – Despite the fact that Belgium is a relatively small fund distribution market in Europe, it is an interesting market with a strong appetite for mutual funds. Open architecture is well developed and the demand for international fund houses is growing. Currently we are onboarding Société Générale Private Bank Belgium after a successful onboarding of Banque Degroof earlier on this year. We hope that the regional and healthy fund market will positively influence the decision makers in Brussels when it comes to policies and regulations
The Netherlands – MFEX has been doing business in the Netherlands since 2001. Knowledge about mutual funds as well as a balanced allocation in various mutual fund strategies made the market very interesting for fund houses from around the world. However, due to the ban of rebates and recent regulatory changes, we feel that the open architecture is in danger and the Dutch fund industry lost momentum compared to other European markets. This has resulted in fewer choices and a cost increase for the final customer. Various assets managers are either leaving the Netherlands or approach the market with a rather opportunistic mind set.
Luxembourg – remains the most important fund administration market in Europe. A good majority of funds are registered in Luxembourg and the European UCITS structure is gaining international traction. However, Luxemburg is not only interesting from a custody / administrative point of view. Various private banks and large financial institutions are making Luxemburg an excellent destination within our industry. And did you know: Luxembourg has a thriving local wine industry, the winding river Moselle with all of the vinyards stretching into Germany is a popular destination during the summer.
